Jonah #1

INTRODUCTION (Christology?)
Admitting we were wrong, that is hard enough. Saving face is a huge issue for some of us. Admitting we were wrong and then writing about it for the entire world and all of history to read what spiritual dunces we were, that takes major gumption.
I look back at my blockheadness when I served as associate pastor in Cranbrook, Canada. I did not want to be an associate pastor; I should be a lead pastor, te pastor in charge. Hadn’t God given me leadership gifts? So what was I doing as an associate? I think thee time I became so frustrated in that position where I could not change anything, I sent out letters to superintendents to let them know I was available for a leading pastor position. I never had peace and withdrew them each time, but contiued my ministry there a little grudgingly. Surely God knew how talented I was. Only after our leading pastor resigned and the church asked me to stay, did I understand God’s plan for me. That can and was embarrassing. I was not trusting the Lord like I should have.
That is the story of Jonah. After he makes a terrible mess of his calling of God to Nineveh, he writes his story. This series of four sermons, I pray, will extract some of the lessons for us..
This man, Jonah, prophesied in Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II, probably around 785 – 750 BC. During this time Assyrians, whose capital city was Nineveh, became aggressive and a pain in Israel’s backside. They viewed each other as enemies.
It is a short little book but is pregnant with lessons about God and about people.
You can read the book of Jonah in fifteen minutes. Here is my request of you as your pastor: read through this book in one sitting at least once each of the next four weeks. (PRAYER)

I GOD’S CALL (Read 1,2)
This will not be the first time Jonah had a word from the Lord. Prophecy involves a direct message from God, and Jonah will have prophesied many times. God called him for a reason. I think we can say he was experienced and must have had a successful track record. God gave this man a gift and now God had a special assignment for Jonah- probably the first call to go outside of Israel. Maybe that fact raised Jonah’s response.
The Holy Spirit places in each of us gifts God wants us to use to advance His Kingdom. You can check out some of the gifs in Romans 12 and I Corinthians 12,13,14. With those gifts come callings; God setts before you situations to use you gifts. The Christian’s life becomes an exciting journey when we open ourselves to using those gifts. Sometimes He may ask you to go to a place like Bali (us); sometimes next door to the neighbor, a teacher in a secular school, a writer, a yard man. None is more important.
We see an attribute of God in this story, too. Jesus teaches us to love our enemies. Here God manifests His love and compassion even for the enemies of His people. God does not destroy people on whim, or out of prejudice. He is not willing that any should perish.
God sees the wickedness of the Ninevites, but gives them a chance to change.

Why? Why would Jonah refuse God’s call? 1) Hadn’t had a holiday for a long time. 2) He was afraid of the Ninevites- a warlike, cruel people. 3) Had arthritis and riding camel for hundreds of miles (show where) would be too hard on his body. 4) Knew that if he went far enough West, he had to get to Nineveh. 5) He had a cultural prejudice against these backward people. 6) He liked the scenery along the Mediterranean better than the desert. Whatever the reason or excuse, Jonah blatantly went against God’s call.
“He ran away,” “to flee from the Lord.”
Which direction are our lives pointed right now? Check your spiritual compass. Are you moving to Nineveh? (Tell story of Bill Bohaychuck) OR are you heading to Joppa and maybe already on the boat to Tarshish? What is your true calling?
The Bible calls willful rejection of God’s call, rebellion, and Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” I Samuel 15:23

Since God is everywhere, Jonah and we, cannot run away from Him. Not only does God know where we are, He can bring circumstances to bear on us rebellious ones that bring us to our senses. Here, first he whips up a fierce storm., so violent these hardened, experienced sailors went into panic mode, because they were sure the ship would break up. They threw cargo overboard, and they began to yell out to their gods to save them.
No matter where we are, God is there. Distance is no factor. Darkness is no factor. Crowds or traffic won’t stop Him,_______________, ______________,____________
A poem was written in called “The Hound of Heaven.”
In “The Hound of Heaven,” the narrator knows that he is pursued by God. He tries to
ignore God, avoid God, substitute other things for God. He revels in his youth, he
immerses himself in nature, he rejoices in his independence, he can do it all without God,
he’s sure, and yet God is always there, nipping at his heels, running him down, the “hound
of heaven,” because God knows, sooner or later, down deep, God is what we are after,
and what God provides, nothing else can.
God never forces us, but He might apply some persuasion.

How could Jonah sleep when this storm tosses the ship around and there is desperation and panic all around him? And, besides, he has just intentionally defied God. Almost sounds like he lacks a conscience.
The sailors begin to wonder maybe the stranger is somehow connected with this freak storm. They wake him, and prod him with questions. During this time, suddenly Jonah’s gift shows up. He says I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.
Oh, Oh. The one who made the sea? Jonah’s God must be mad about something, likely what the sailors are thinking. They question Jonah further and ask for his solution. And Jonah says, If you want to get rid of this storm, you’ll have to get rid of me. There is no other way, you can’t stop off at an island in this hurricane, you’ll have to dump me overboard. It wasn’t the cargo you needed to unload, it was me.
The waves grow larger, heaving the ship, they splash over the sides, the huge planks of the ship groan and creak, threatening to splinter and crack. The sailors do no want to antagonize Jonah’s God further, by throwing him over for the sharks. They try to row against the storm, but without any success. In fact, the storm stirs up even larger waves. They reluctantly throw the stranger overboard, even praying to Jonah’s God to forgive them. (Pretty decent bunch of sailors, don’t you think? Seem a better lot than Jonah, supposedly the man of God) What a brief testimony can sometimes do to connect unbelievers with God & Jesus? We never know. All the while, the sailors become God’s instruments for God to fulfill His original purpose to take “The word” to Nineveh. How persistent, resourceful, compassionate are God’s ways!

I thought of another title for this sermon: “Let Me Have My Way, or Let Me Die.”
As far as I can tell, the sailors did not lower Jonah onto a rubber dinghy. We don’t read that they gave him three lifejackets, either. He left the deck of that ship flying through the air with only the clothes on his back. How much time did God have to provide this great fish. How long could Jonah stay afloat before bubbling to the bottom of the Med. Sea? Not much. Up comes a great fish, another intervention by God, and swallows this rebellious, self-willed prophet whole. And there, in the stomach, Jonah competes with what other things for oxygen for three days? My Dad brought home a 20lb. pike (fish) one day and it had entire mudhen in its stomach.
What would you ask Jonah if you could? Jonah? You like this better than riding the camel a few hundred miles? Think it over, my dear prophet. You’re getting a unique ride, true, but maybe you won’t get to Tarshish. And how’s the scenery? The windows- they’re a little steamed up, I’d say. But never mind, it’s all free.


God’s call for us may be hard to understand, it may frighten us, or show up our prejudices, or we may feel quite unqualified. Can you name one person in the Bible when he/she is called enthusiastically, jumps at it?
God’s call often cuts across our own preferences, dreams, biases, and hopes. We squirm, we argue, we rebel. But His ways are always the best possible way. Do you really want to go against the ways of a God who can bring all kinds of obstacles into your path? You will be most successful if you follow His call. You will be happiest if you follow His call. Learn from Jonah, that rebellion leads to unhappy endings.

Nineveh? How about Tarshish, Lord? OR I’m scared but I’ll trust You
Bali? How about Canada, Lord? OR I don’t know the Bahasa, but you can love
Africa? How about Hawaii, Lord? OR You’ll have remove fear of snakes, God

I Will Lift My Eyes

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2

“Pray always,” Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Prayer should be part of our daily life, for it gives us the opportunity for offering thanks and for staying in communication with the Father.

Prayer also gives us the opportunity to come to Him with our requests. The Father promises, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which though knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Let’s pray together:

Father God, I raise my voice to you and look up. Wash and cleanse me in Your blood and remove all my sin. You are my sun and shield. You bring grace and glory. You have not withheld any good thing from me and I commit to walk uprightly before You (Psalm 84:11). Look upon my life and bring healing to me today. You are my righteousness and strength. I will look unto You my Savior and always glorify Your name.

Healing: A Heavenly Grace

When the psalmist called upon all that was within him to bless the Lord, he cried, “Bless the Lord,… who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases” (Ps. 103:2-3). When Isaiah foretold the deliverance of his people, he added, “The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity” (Isa. 33:24).

This prediction was accomplished beyond all anticipation when Jesus the Redeemer came down to this earth. How numerous were the healings brought about by Him who had come to establish on earth the kingdom of heaven!

By His own acts and afterward by the commands that He left for His disciples, He showed us clearly that the preaching of the Gospel and the healing of the sick went together in the salvation that He came to bring.

Both are given as evidence of His mission as the Messiah: “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk… and the poor have the gospel preached to them” (Matt. 11:5).

Jesus, who took upon Himself the soul and body of man, delivers both in equal measure from the consequences of sin.

Market place is place for people to dispute one to another about many things. Place for community to interaction; place to trading, buying, and selling goods, etc. In market place, many people do not know about Jesus. (Vs. 18)

III. Anointed to Next Level
A. Vision From God
Vision will guide your life to getting your purpose in the future. Vision will fulfill when you keep strong in God. The word of God makes vision clearly for our path, calling, and destiny in this world. (Vs. 16).
B. Holiness Life
Holiness is our life style (John 17: 17 – 19). Holiness life will bring us to a as a great and marvelous life in Jesus Christ.
C. The Next Level
1. Church
Church is place to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
2. Market Place
After all we prepared and ready. God want us to reach the unreached people group outside the church. We do not just stay in four wall of Church, but go to out side of the Church. Not all of you become a pastor, evangelist or etc. at the Church. You must back to your works in the market place. And become a witness of Christ at your works place. Why we should be witness on market place? Because many people there need Jesus; they’re hungry and thirsty to the Righteousness. They were harassed and helpless.
3. Absolute Ruler / Highest Role
Some people, they’re chosen to go to highest place in the Government. Think what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. (Vs. 22)

A. God is the creator of the universe – Ac 17:24
1. Acknowledging their religious devotion, he made mention of one altar in particular – Ac 17:22-23a
a. An altar with the inscription: “To The Unknown God”
b. So devout, they sought to worship a god they did not know
2. He used this as an opportunity to preach concerning the True God they did not know! – Ac 17:23b
B. God is the sustainer of life – Ac 17:25
1. He gives to all life their breath and what they need – cf. Jm 1:17
2. Therefore God is not worshipped as though He needs it
C. God is the ruler of all the nations – Ac 17:26-27

2. Everything is designed to prompt men to seek God, who is not far from any of us

1. From God we come; and in Him we live, move, and have our very being

1. What ignorance He may have overlooked in the past, such is no longer the case
2. He now commands all men everywhere to repent
3. Why? Because of the coming Judgment, in which…
a. God will judge the world in righteousness
b. God will judge the world through Jesus Christ – Jn 5:22,26-27; 12:48

Mission Journey 2011

We’ll conduct a program “Hope Of Nation” 2011. It’s plan on midst of year 2011.

On this mission journey, we will going to West Kalimantan, Malasya, Singepore and Thailand, to encourage the Unreach People Group, empowering and training leaders, also go to orpanage with children of outcast.

After ten years of ministry (almost in exclusively) in Indonesia, we are now setting our sights on other parts of the world. Next 5 month we will return to West Kalimantans after nearly three years. We are confident that a huge harvest is waiting to be reaped there and we need your help to go. Please continue to support us with your prayers and finances…we depend on you.

Dear partner, please intercede for us throughout this year. The work happening here is a matter of life and death for multitudes of people. We are co-laborers together with you and whether your calling is to pray, to pay or to preach, each one of us is a vital link in the chain of God’s purposes. Thank you for your partnership.

How TO Preach The Gospel

Pope to meet with Anglican leader amid rising tension

Pope Benedict XVI is expected to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury on Saturday, the first meeting between the religious leaders since a Catholic overture to disaffected Anglicans that some commentators compared to a hostile takeover on Wall Street.

Rowan Williams, the nominal head of the world Anglican Communion, threw down a theological gauntlet to the pope in a highly challenging speech in Rome in the run-up to their meeting.

He laid out a series of questions suggesting that decades of hard-won apparent reconciliation between the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations might have weak foundations.

He also proposed that a truly universal Christian church might have to be structured more like the Anglican Communion — with no central authority laying down the law — than like the Catholic Church, with the pope on his throne.

“Is there a mechanism in the church that has the clear right to determine for all where the limits of Christian identity might be found?” Williams asked. “Is the integrity of the church ultimately dependent on a single identifiable ministry of unity to which all local ministries are accountable?”

The meeting comes in the wake of a Vatican move that some say will shatter more than 40 years of efforts to reconcile the Catholic and Anglican churches.

The Vatican announced in October that it had worked out a way for Anglicans who are dissatisfied with their church to switch allegiance en masse to Rome.

The process will enable groups of Anglicans to become Catholic and recognize the pope as their leader, yet have parishes that retain Anglican rites, Vatican officials said. The move comes some 450 years after King Henry VIII broke from Rome and created the Church of England, forerunner of the Anglican Communion.

The number of Anglicans wishing to join the Catholic Church has increased in recent years as the Anglican Church has welcomed the ordination of women and openly gay clergy, said Cardinal William Joseph Levada, the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in announcing the move in October.

Williams was said to have been taken by surprise by the move, which critics described as an end run around a long-established Catholic-Anglican dialogue.

“The Catholic Church is responding to the many requests that have been submitted to the Holy See from groups of Anglican clergy and faithful in different parts of the world who wish to enter into full visible communion,” Levada said.

Levada said “hundreds” of Anglicans around the world have expressed their desire to join the Catholic Church. Among them are 50 Anglican bishops, said Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia of the Congregation for Divine Worship.

Catholic and Anglican theology and rites are broadly similar, but Anglicans have long allowed priests to marry and have children.

In recent decades, the Anglican Communion has allowed women to become priests. The Episcopal Church, the United States branch of the Anglican Communion, has ordained an openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson, and appears to be on the verge of ordaining more.

Those developments have caused controversy within the communion, with more conservative parishes setting up alternative structures of authority.

Pope Benedict hinted clearly when he last met Williams in Rome almost exactly three years ago to the day that Rome did not look kindly on the Anglican moves.

“Recent developments, especially concerning the ordained ministry and certain moral teachings, have affected not only internal relations within the Anglican Communion but also relations between the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church,” the pope said in November 2006.

“We believe that these matters, which are presently under discussion within the Anglican Communion, are of vital importance to the preaching of the gospel in its integrity, and that your current discussions will shape the future of our relations,” he added.

There are about 77 million Anglicans worldwide, and about 1.1 billion Roman Catholics.

Tujuan Misi

Memberitakan Kabar Baik

Berita tentang penyaliban Tuhan Yesus, dan kematian-Nya lalu bangkit pada hari ketiga adalah merupakan dasar berita baik bagi umat Kristen pada khususnya dan dunia pada umumnya. Inti beritanya adalah meliputi keselamatan dan pengampunan dosa.

Menurut Charles C. Ryrie ada tiga alasan mengapa Allah berkehendak untuk menyelamatkan orang-orang berdosa.

 1. Hal ini merupakan perwujudan yang paling besar dan paling nyata dari kasih Allah. Karunia-karunia-Nya yang baik secara alami oleh pemeliharaan-Nya (betapa besarnyapun) tidak dapat dibandingkan dengan pemberian anak-Nya untuk menjadi Juru Selamat kita, Yohanes 3:16 mengingatkan bahwa kasih-Nya dinyatakan dalam karunia-Nya dan Roma 5:8 mengatakan bahwa Allah secara meyakinkan membuktikan bahwa Ia mengasihi manusia melalui kematian Kristus.

2. Keselamatan juga menunjukkan karunia atau anugerah Allah yang kekal (Efesus 2:7). Tiap orang yang diselamatkan akan menjadi tanda kemenangan khusus dari anugerah Allah selama-lamanya.

 3. Allah juga menghendaki suatu umat yang akan melalkukan suatu umat yang akan melalkukan pekerjaan baik dalam hidup ini dan dengan demikian memperlihatkan kepada dunia …” Menyatakan Dosa Dosa adalah suatu pelanggaran yang menetang kemuliaan Allah sehingga manusia berada diluar dari sasaran yang Allah inginkan.

Akibat dari dosa

a. Hubungan manusia dengan Tuhan terputus

 b. Manusia hidup dalam kutuk Allah

c. Mati (Roma 3:23)

d. Menyebabkan kebutaan rohani (II Korintus 4:4)

Menyatakan Yesus

Menurut Harun Hadiwiyono dalam bukunya Iman Kristen, mengatakan bahwa: “Kata Yesus dalam bahasa ibrani adalah Yehosyua, yang berarti: Tuhan menolong, yaitu menolong umat-Nya.”

Dalam Perjanjian Lama nama Yehosyua, dipakai oleh Allah untuk menolong umatnya, antara lain:

1. Yosua bin Nun, pengganti Musa. Yang membawa masuk bangsa Israel masuk ke tanah perjanjian (Joshua 1:1-10)

2. Yosua bin Yosadak, Imam besar yang membawa bangsa Israel kembali ke negrinya dan tanah pembuangan di Babel bersama-sama dengan Zerubabel. Sedangkan dalam perjanjian baru.

Kata yosua kita kenal dengan nama Yesus, yang disebut Juru Selamat manusia. Artinya Tuhan menolong. Nama Yesus ini merupakan kary a Allah dalam mewujudkan maksud-Nya untuk menolong umat-Nya dari perhambaan dosa serta yang memimpin umat-Nya masuk ke tanah perjanjian yang kekal (sorga).

Dalam Pengajaran ciri yang paling khas Yesus ajarkan adalah menyatakan bahwa Allah adalah Bapa yang merupakan hubungan antara Allah dan orang percaya adalah sama dengan hubungan seorang Ayah dan Anak-Nya Menyatakan Keselamatan Kata keselamatan berasal bahasa Yunani, Soteria, berarti Pembebasan.

Dalam Perjanjian Lama keselamatan dinyatakan allah dalam diriNya sebagai Allah yang menyelamatkan umat-Nya. (Maz. 27:1; 88:2). Dan dalam perjanjian baru, keselamatan digambarkan sebagai jalan menuju kepada persekutuan abadi dengan Allah di Sorga (Matius 7:14; Markus 12:14; Yohanes 14:16). Keselamatan diberikan Allah kepada umat-Nya secara cuma-cuma Puncak peristiwa kematian Yesus diatas kayu salib menandakan Yesus datang ke dunia dengan Misi Allah yaitu memberi keselamatan kepada manusia yang percaya kepada-Nya.

Memuridkan Semua Bangsa

Allah telah melakukan sesuatu yang mengagumkan dan tidak pernah didengar sebelumnya. Sesuatu yang khusus dalam sejarah dunia. Ia menyuruh kita pergi ke seleuruh dunia dan menjadikan semua bangsa murid-Nya.

Kita harus patuh pada amanat Agung-Nya dan membangun pelayanan persahabatan/penginjilan/pemuridan di setiap bangsa di dunia. Yesus Kristus berkata bahwa Inijil Kerajaan akan diberitakan di seluruh dunia menjadi kesaksian sampai pada “kesudahan”.

Tugas-tugas yang harus Gereja lakukan.

Sebagai alat Tuhan gereja mempunyai tugas yang begitu penting di dalam dunia ini. Banyak dan beragamnya tugas gereja yang ada diseluruh penjuru dunia, tergantung keadaan dan kebutuhan dimana gereja itu berada. Namun pada dasarnya ada tiga tugas geeja yang paling utama yang harus dilakukan oleh setiap gereja dimana pun gereja itu berada. Ketiga tugas tersebut adalah Koinonia (persekutuan), Diakonia (pelayanan) dan Marturia (bersaksi dan memberitakan Firman Tuhan).

Dasar Teologi Misi

 Pengertian misi akan selalu berhubungan dengan sejarah keselamatan Allah sendiri bagi umat-Nya mengerti dan memahami dasar dari Teologia. Teologia bukanlah sekedar kumpulan doktrin/ajaran yang dapat dipegang dan digunakan untuk menghadapi bermacam-macam persoaln di segala zaman dan tempat. Juga bukan setumpuk resep-resep agamawi yang manjur dalam memecahkan segala masalah keidupan orang Kristen. Perkataan Theologia dari bahasa Yunani Theos,yanyg berarti Allah dan Logia, yang berarti perkataan.

 Jadi, teologia berarti bidang ilmu yang mempelajari iman dan tindakan dan pengalaman agama. Sedangkan Misi, menurut Kamus latin bahasa Indonesia, Missio berasal dari kata Mitto yang mempunyai arti sebagai berikut: Pengiriman; hal mengutus; hal membiarkan pergi seperti : pembebasan (orang tawanan/tahanan); pemberhentian (dari dinas militer); Misi, Mitto mempunyai arti: menyebabkan pergi, membiarkan pergi (membebaskan, melepaskan).

Jadi, Teologi Misi adalah ilmu yang mempelajari iman dan tindakan serta pengalaman tentang pengutusan atau pengiriman seseorang untuk melakukan pelayanan pengabaran Injil Yesus Kristus.

A. Misi Menurut Perjanjian Lama

Di dalam Kitab perjanjian Lama tidak terdapat suatu penegasan yang secara tegas untuk melakukan Pekabaran Injil atau Misi kepada bangsa-bangssa, namun sungguhpun demikian bukan berarti Allah tidak mempnyai Misi untuk menjangkau bangsa-bangsa lain. Justru peranan Allah sendirilah misi itu diwujudkan melalui penciptaan Alam Semesta dan mat-Nya bangsa Israel.

Teologia Misi yang mempunyai arti mencolok dari kata Misi adalah pengutusan keluar kepada banga-bangsa (bangsa non Kristen) di dunia untuk menyampaikan suatu berita keselamatan dan kesukaan (injil) datangnya Kerajaan Allah dalam Tuhan Yesus Kristus, yang dilakukan baik melalui pemberitaan secara lisan maupun melalui pelayanan diakonal, yang bersift kesaksian dan pelayanan secara holistic (keseluruhan).

Mengingat bahwa umat Israel pada jaman perjanjian lama merupakan umat perjanjian Allah, umat pilihan Allah yang dipilih oleh Allah sendiri untuk menjadikan umat-Nya yang mengemban Perjanjian Kekal yang menyatakan kasih setia tuhan terhadap semua orang yang percaya; sehubungan dengan itu agar Israel menjadi berkat bagi semua Bangsa dimuka bumi, seperti dalam pemanggilan Abraham yang pertama dalam kejadian 12:2-3 yang berbunyi sebagai berikut: “Aku akan membuat engkau menjadi bangsa yang besar, dan memberkati engkau serta membuat namamu masyur, dan engkau akan menjadi berkat. Aku akan memberkati orang-orang yang memberkati engkau, dan mengutuk orang-orang yang mengutuk engkau, dan olehmu semua kaum dimuka bumi akan mendapat berkat.”

Di dalam kejadian 3:15, tersirat janji Allah mengenai rencana Allah bagi penebusan dunia ini. Ini merupakan misi Allah bagi umat manusia dalam mematahkan perlawanan si iblis di antara keturuanan wanita (Tuhan Yesus Kristus), terhadap keturunan ular (iblis danseterusnya) dan janji bahwa akan lahir juru sSelamat melalui seorang wanita (bnd Yesaya 7:14) serta kemenangan atas maut demi kese;amatan umat manusia (bnd. Yesaya 53:5; Matius 1:20-23; Yohanes 12:31; Kisah Para Rasul 26:18; Roma 5:18-19; 16:20; I Yoh. 3:8; Wahyu 20:10.

Dalam pengertian ini Israel bisa disebut juga “Ecclesia” zaman Perjanjian Lama yang mendapat tugas pengutusan (Misi), juga ke ujung bumi. Memang pada zaman Perjanjian Lama belum terlihat sebagai Gereja yang bersifat missioner, hanya sporadic tugas panggilan itu dinampakkan secara individual, umapamanya dalam diri Abraham, Musa, Yunus dan lain-lain. Menyadari panggilan ini Israel bukan saja merupakan bangsa yang ditugaskan Allah untuk memerangi bangsa-bangsa lain. Tetapi sekaligus menjadi motivator untuk menjadi berkat bagi bangsa-bangsa yang ditaklukkannya untukdapat menyampaikan seruan pertobatan terhadap Allah yang disembah. Dalam melakukan tugas panggilan Misi, bangsa Israel tidak sedikit harus mengalami penderitaan sebagai “Hamba Tuhan”. Untuk datang kepada terang-Nya.

 Umpamanya dalam Yesaya dikatakan bahwa: “Bangsa-bangsa berduyun-duyun datang kepada terang-Mu, dan Raja-raja kepada cahaya yang terbit bagimMu. Angkatlah mataMu dan lihatlah ke sekeliling, mereka semua berhimpuan kepadaMu …” (Yesaya 60:3) “Bangsa-bangsa akan melihat kebenaranMu, dan semua raja akan melihat kemuliaanMu, dan orang akan menyebut dengan nama baru yang akan ditentukan oleh Tuhan sendiri. ” (Yesaya 62:2). Menurut H. Venema dalam bukunya Injil Untuk Semua Orang, mengatakan bahwa: “Dengan pemanggilan Abram, Tuhan mengambil kembali inisiatif dari tangan manusia. Tuhan mengambil kembali control atas langit dan bumi. Tuhan menyatakan diri lagi sebagai Raja segala bangsadan melanjutkan rencana-Nya. Pemanggilan Abram adalah bukti kuasa Tuhan.”

Berdasarkan penjelasan diatas, penulis mengambil pelajaran dan pemahaman penting bahwa:

 a. Orang yang diutus untuk mengabarkan kebenaran Firman Tuhan dalam perjanjian Lama adalah menyangkut tugas esensial bagi Israel sebagai umat Perjanjian.

b. Israel dipilih oleh Allah, atas dasar kemurahan dan kasih karunia Allah, dalam rangka rencana keselamatan Allah bagi bangsa-bangsa.

c. Umat Israel dalam Perjanjian Lama dipanggil keluar dalam memenuhi utusan Allah ke bangsa-bangsa lain (non Kristen), dalam era zaman baru Israel berfungsi sebagai saksi dan hamba Tuhan.

d. Allah mengutus Israel di dalam Perjanjian Lama secara propetis menjadiberkat dan esukaan besar bagi bangsa-bangsa lain. Agar mereka secara berduyun-duyun datang kepada Tuhan untuk menyembah dan memuji-muji Tuhan di dunia yang baru, dimana Yerusalem secara simbolis menjadi pusatnya.

e. Pengutusan Israel dalam Perjanjian Lama merupakan landasan dasar dan gambaran perspektif misioner di dalam perjanjian baru yang luas sampai ke ujung bumi dan kedatangan kerajaan Allah dalam Tuhan Yesus Kristus (Yesaya 60:3; 62:2).


B. Misi Menurut Perjanjian Baru

Dalam perjanjian Baru, Misi adalah suatu ekspresi kehidupan sikap orang percaya di dalam kekristenan.

Menurut David Royal Brong Ham dalam bukunya Merencanakan Misi, mengatakan bahwa:  ”Dalam Perjanjian Baru, misi adalah ekspresi yang wajar dari kekristenan yang hidup.“[1]

Yesus Kristus adalah pelopor misi itu sendiri. Oleh karena Ia di dalam hidupnya selalu melakukan tugas pelayanan kepada orang-orang yang perlu pertolongan. Yesus sendiri sepenuhnya menyadari tugas-Nya dari Bapa. Dia tahu  berdiri di depan manusia sebagai ganti allah Bapa: lihat Yohanes 14:9). Jadi, Yesus sadar dan mengerti dengan betul bahwa Dia adalah seorang yang diutus, sedang misionaris, sperti yang tertulis dalam Yohanes 6:38: “Sebab Aku telah turun dari Surga bukan untuk melakukan kehendak-Ku, tetapi untuk melakukan kehendak Dia yang telah mengutus Aku.”

Dalam misi, Yesus ingin apa yang Ia lakukan dapat dilakukan oleh semua orang (Para pengikut-pengikutNya).

Menurut Donald Guthrie dalam bukunya Teologia Penjanjian Baru 2, mengatakan bahwa:

Yesus memandang misi-Nya sebagai sesuatu yang melibatkan orang lain. Hal ini dengan ringkas dikemukakan dalam Yohanes 17:1 9, dimana Yesus berdoa: Aku menguduskan (Hagiazo) diriKu bagi mereka, supaya merekapun dikuduskan dalam kebenaran. Ia tidak hanya berbuat sesuatu demi/untuk mereka melainkan Ia berbuat sesuatu yang melibatkan mereka.[2]

Secara umum Misi Perjanjian Baru adalah untuk melaksanakan maksud daripada penebusan Allah bagi dunia. Dengan kata lain, Misi adalah melaksanakan apa yang dikehendaki Allah. Berbeda dengan Misi Perjanjian Lama, maka dalam Perjanjian Baru metode-metode misi tentunya telah berubah dn akan mengalami perubahan senantiasa, akan tetapi misi Allah yang ditegakkan pada prinsipnya tetap sama.
